Intro to Kf: Cloud Foundry apps on Kubernetes

While many companies are writing brand-new Kubernetes-based applications, it’s still quite common to find companies who want to migrate existing workloads. A common source platform for these applications is Cloud Foundry. However, getting an existing Cloud Foundry application running on Kubernetes can be non-trivial, especially if you want to avoid making code changes in your applications, or taking on big process changes across teams. That is, if you’re not using Kf to do a lot of that heavy lifting for you. Kf is a Google Cloud service that allows you to easily move existing Cloud Foundry workloads to Kubernetes with minimal disruption to your existing processes. Kf features a command line interface (CLI) also named kf, that replaces the existing Cloud Foundry cf command line utility. The kf CLI implements the most commonly used cf functionality, including the ability to manage bindings, services, apps, routes and more. Fixed price but limited "Developer" GCP accounts?

I have a pretty basic application on GCP that I developed and run for learning and professional development. There are competitor platforms that will let me do this for only $50 per month fixed cost. I would like to be able to do this on GCP as well since I like “playing” here but don’t want to have to quit if it just becomes a “little too expensive”. How do others feel about this?Just for FYI, my application has 3 VMs, 1) mysql, 2) GKE, 3) A small kafka instance from the marketplace. I also use a loadbalancer configuration for ingress and have paid extra for my own domain name. I was close to $50 a month anyway since I was running everything on the “First Generation” machines but I’ve upgraded the GKE instance to “Second Generation” for stability reasons. What is too much? Perhaps over $75 a month and it becomes more than a hobby.

Legacy Application Modernization approach?

Dear C2C’er, Many organisations still have what I would call legacy applications within and even running their businesses. Applications built on Lotus Notes, or bespoke Microsoft Access systems. Lift and Shift doesn’t seem to be a valid approach and rebuilding the functionality may be costly. Does anyone have any experience or advice for these organisations on a migration strategy?
