Thanks for joining us, Zurich! It was great to see Thomas Graf present Cilium at the last C2C! He is the CTO of Isovalent, one of the companies at the forefront of eBPF technology.
Cilium is an open source project to provide networking, security, and observability for cloud native environments such as Kubernetes clusters and other container orchestration platforms.
At the foundation of Cilium is a new Linux kernel technology called eBPF, which enables the dynamic insertion of powerful security, visibility, and networking control logic into the Linux kernel. eBPF is used to provide high-performance networking, multi-cluster and multi-cloud capabilities, advanced load balancing, transparent encryption, extensive network security capabilities, transparent observability, and much more.
Many companies currently use Cillium for a variety of reasons:

Financials for the possibility to do a network segmentation audit via SIEM

E-commerce to meet PCI and user data security requirements

Telecoms for secure and high-performance connectivity
We also got to see a demo of Hubble and the Network Policy editor which allows for cloud-native observability and traffic flow management.
Thomas also spoke about a relatively new feature of Cilium, Service Mesh. It introduces an option to run a service mesh completely without sidecars while supporting various control plane options. It complements the existing Istio integration based on sidecars that has been available as part of Cilium so far.
