High-Performance Computing (HPC) applications are very compute intensive. These are engineering and scientific applications that simulate complex physics / technical / scientific phenomena like weather and climate, drug design and molecular modeling, fluid dynamics and material analysis e.g. in automotive and aerospace applications, and many more. In manufacturing, basically every new product, machine, part, etc. is simulated befor it gets built. And often, these simulations take hours, days, or even weeks to complete on powerful workstations.
Now here comes the cloud; with vast computing resources and storage, you can run such simulations on many more servers, in parallel, reducing simulation time by a factor of 10 and more!
Still, you have to ‘on-board’ your application to the cloud which in most cases is quite cumbersome, time-consuming, error-prone, and needs a lot of expertise that’s often not available in many companies.
But, the good news is, in the meantime, there are automated and self-service engineering simulation platforms based on Kubernetes and hosting engineering applications in so-called HPC software containers that make moving your applications to the cloud very easy.
